The Worthwhile Moments of Being a Wedding Musician in Charleston

As I reflect on a recent wedding, I am reminded of why I started Charleston Bows & Strings in the first place.

For more than 20 years, I have had the privilege of performing as a violinist at weddings, experiencing beautiful venues, sentimental vows, and the joyful cheers that follow a couple’s first kiss as newlyweds. Every wedding is unique, and each one offers an opportunity to be part of a memory that a couple, and their families, will cherish for the rest of their lives.

Before founding Charleston Bows & Strings, I performed with several different wedding music groups. I am grateful for those experiences which helped shaped me as a musician and wedding professional. However, I wanted something more: the opportunity to build personal connections with couples, learn more about their wedding vision, and understand the kind of musical atmosphere they hoped to create for their ceremony and cocktail hour.

I also wanted to experience more directly the impact that live music could have on a couple’s wedding day.

Recently, I performed at a beautiful wedding at Seabrook Island Country Club, where the oceanfront setting provided a stunning backdrop for the ceremony. Rain had been in the forecast for much of the day, but as the afternoon arrived, the sun emerged, creating a beautiful setting for the celebration.

My pianist and I provided the ceremony music, performing classical favorites such as Swan Lake, Canon in D, and the bridal processional Liz on Top of the World. It was a wonderful ceremony, and we were delighted to be part of such a meaningful occasion.

But one of the most memorable moments of the day happened after the ceremony ended. The bride’s parents approached me and shared how wonderful they thought we sounded. Then they said something that truly made my day: “This is what they wanted.”

Those words meant so much to me. In that moment, I understood that the music we had performed had helped bring the couple’s vision to life. We had not simply beautiful music; we had helped create the atmosphere they had imagined for one of the most important days of their lives.

I drove all the way home with a big smile on my face, feeling grateful for the opportunity to have made a difference. Long after the last note had faded, the memories of a wedding day remain with couple and their loved ones. Knowing that our music contributed to those memories is one of the rewarding parts of what I do.

These are the moments that continue to inspire me as a musician and as the founder of Charleston & Strings. I want every couple we work with to feel heard, understood, and confident that their musical is in good hands. I also value the relationships I build with the talented musicians who help bring each celebration to life.

Every wedding is an opportunity to create something meaningful. I look forward to the celebrations ahead, the couples I will meet, and the special moments we will help make possible through music.

At Charleston Bows & Strings, it is not just about the music we play. It is about the memories we help create.
